Cuvier and Valenciennes described a new species Blennius fucorum, based on a specimen captured 80 miles south if the Azores in rafting algae. Bath (1994) studied the specimen and found that it is Hypleurochilus fissicornis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824), which inhabits the south Atlantic coasts of Brazil and Uruguay. The specimen must have reached the region of the Azores associated with rafting algae (Fucus natan).
